2019 Pearce Candidates Views on PFAS in Bullsbrook
We emailed each of the 10 Pearce election candidates the following questions about PFAS in Pearce. Their answers in order of response are posted below. We thank those candidates who took the time to respond. The list of questions we asked and the names and parties of candidates are listed below.
Answers received from candidates
Steve Blyth - The Nationals
- Will you support the immediate provision of scheme water to the West Bullsbrook townsite at the federal government's cost? yes
- Will you support provision of free PFAS blood tests for those Bullsbrook people who request them? yes
- How would you ensure the free blood tests are made available? VIA a small funded program through community health program
- Will you support a buy back scheme for those residents whose properties are within the investigation area and rely on bore water - this includes any level of contamination or no contamination. I am willing to look at what a buy back scheme would look like in terms of community benefit, cost and resolution to the issue.
- If you are an independent or member of a minor party how would you ensure federal government funding became available for the above? By continually looking at how I could use this issue as leverage. By being actively involved in policy in this area and by continual focused advocacy. You know the saying “ squeaky wheel” I do not have to follow party lines which will enable me to fight for the issues of my electorate.
Michael Calautti - Western Australian Party

Thank you for I your email and interest in the PFAS contaminated area in Bullsbrook, I realise you have been involved over a long period of time, working towards a positive outcome.
I can only imagine the stress it is causing to the residents.
Firstly the government has got to take full responsibility for this debacle.
This is not the fault of the community and don’t understand the delays in resolving this issue.
I have read the latest Senate Committee Report, which I think is gathering a little dust…and to have only 1 recommendation acted on is a disgrace and a cop out for the government.
Charles Smith MLC, Senator Georgiou and myself have been actively trying to support the local community in the area of media releases, tabling the PFAS issues in both the state and federal parliament.
We at One Nation fully support to provide scheme water to the residents of West Bullsbrook, this was proposed to the local state government which you would be aware of their not supporting this and had directed the cause to the federal parliament, which we have seen little response.
I believe the blood tests required are quite expensive and must be fully funded by the government, without delay. There would be a policy put
The buyback scheme would be supported by One Nation to an agreed value of the house and land by both the owner and government, we both know from past endeavours the government has not always had the land owners best interest at heart.
As you are aware our political party has gained many seats in both the federal and state parliament, we are all very passionate towards getting this contamination resolved asap, together as a team we will lobby for the funding to support the Bullsbrook community as we did in the Moora school staying open.
Kind Regards
Sandy Old
